Jordan Wolfson to Exhibit Painting-Cycle/Installation in Solo Show
January 31 – February 24 2019
OPENING: Thursday, January 31 | 6-8pm
808 Projects. 808 Santa Fe Drive, Denver
Award-winning artist, Jordan Wolfson, will be exhibiting his first solo show in Colorado since 2009 at 808 Projects in Denver. The exhibition will present an abridged version of his series, “Song Cycle with Blue Cloth”, an extended polyptych of a single still life, encompassing twenty-seven paintings and eleven drawings. Jordan Wolfson is an international artist known for his use of observational repetition and stylistic change.
Working on the series for over three years, the installation presents a single motif moving through multiple iterations, as Wolfson explores, on the surface, attitudes of inquiry from the visual and tonal to the tactile and felt. This exploration of ways of working, “painterly play”, moves into an investigation of the relationship between form and awareness. Wolfson asks, “What happens as my mind shifts, as I look from one image to another? What is this gap that I find, this space in-between?”
While presented as a movement through time (the objects on the table gradually disappear), the range of modalities investigated are seen not as sequential but simultaneous. An earth-colored, thick rendition is seen next to a tonal painting of somber blues, juxtaposed next to a seemingly minimalist field of creamy paint. The wall itself becomes a critical player, a “space in-between”, as the viewer’s attention moves from one painting to the next, transforming the gallery into an arena of inquiry towards awareness.
Jordan Wolfson was raised in Los Angeles and graduated with an MFA from Yale School of Art in 1991. Exhibiting both nationally and internationally, Wolfson’s work is represented in permanent collections worldwide, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the James T. Dyke Collection and the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Archive. Wolfson has received numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant and a Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; he was a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA and the Ballinglen Art Foundation in Ireland.
