Kehinde Wiley ’01MFA will have his exhibition, A New Republic, displayed at the Toledo Museum of Art this spring. According to the museum, the hallmarks of the exhibition include Wiley’s “signature portraits of everyday men and women riff on paintings by Old Masters, replacing European aristocrats in those paintings with contemporary black subjects and drawing attention to the absence of African Americans from historical and cultural narratives. The exhibition also features a selection from the artist’s ongoing World Stage project, which he started in 2006 by establishing a satellite studio in Beijing; several bronze portrait busts and new stained glass ‘paintings.'”
The New York Times declared that “Wiley is one of the most celebrated painters of his generation,” in 2015. This current showing of his works has also traveled to New York City, Fort Worth, Seattle, and Virginia.
The exhibition will be open from February 10th – May 14th. Please find full details at the Toledo Museum of Art’s website.
